Give us this day, our daily bread

Tag Archives: humility

As I was praying this morning, I looked over my notes from church yesterday. I had written a little reminder to myself at the side of the paper: “Give each task, each assignment, each Thing that will happen in the day to God. Ask for His guidance in everything.”

I am sure this week will have many challenges, not just in my own life, but in your life as well. As of late, I’ve been having some ‘carnal moments’….thinking that I have to do things. I know that God is there. But I had somehow allowed the enemy to tell me that “I” alone, had to figure stuff out.  But that is not the posture that God wants us to have.

He wants us to totally rely on Him…for everything. It may seem a bit extreme. But every time we tell ourselves that ‘we have to fix it’, or ‘it’s all going to be done by our strength’, God takes a bad seat. It could be about anything- writing a paper, paying a bill, doing a task at work, driving home…, calling that person that you’ve been afraid to call for a while. The fact is that without God we can do nothing. We may think we can, but we can’t. When we rely on ourselves, either pride will step in, or fear…which is essentially pride anyway.

So today, I am going to take a step back, and I hope you will to. I am going to ask God to take control of everything that I have to do today, everyone that I have to meet, every conversation, every journey I will take.

Let’s start our day by praying this:

Lord, I acknowledge that you are El Elyon. You know more about everything, than I ever will. So as I go through this day, help me to remember that. As I go through this day, help me to remember to give every decision, task,…whatever…over to you. Holy Spirit, be my Guide. I give you full control of the wheel of this day, and of my life. Help me to get through this day, as you show me how. In Jesus Name.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up – James 4;10

El Elyon means “the Most High God”

Now, I was looking for a scripture that can suffice to explain this. There are a few where God makes himself known as the Most High. Here are a couple.

I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High- Psalm 9:2

And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.- Gen 14:20

You should know that most of these names were personally revealed to the people by God Himself. That’s why many times, it is said that they made a pillar in remembrance of it.
I believe that only God can reveal himself to you as El Elyon.

Here’s how I discovered Him as the Most High. We all go through stuff, right? Well, I was going through something once, and I kept thinking of the ways I should fix it. “I”. “I” had it all planned out.  I had been trying to fix this issue for a long time, but no matter how much “I” tried, it just wouldn’t work. I gave up! I realized that there was nothing that I could do to fix this situation, because there was simply nothing for ME to do. I had done all that I could. That’s when El Elyon showed Himself to me in this verse:

Isaiah 55:8 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

Slap in my face!

El Elyon is the God that is Most High, when you become most low. That’s not to say that He isn’t the Most High all the time. But It’s only when you humble yourself and let Him rule that He becomes known to you as the Most High God. El Elyon is the God that is sovereign, meaning that He has the right to operate within His metron, when He pleases and how He pleases. He is the Superlative God- meaning, He is the best anything you can imagine or think of. He is the strongest of strongs, the greatest….etc. There’s just no one like Him.

When I think of El Elyon now, I think of myself lying flat at the base of Mt Everest. When I am that low, I can see the magnitude of this great mountain and realize how much bigger it is than I. El Elyon is magnificently greater than that.

(Oh, and the situation? Well let’s just say I let Him be the Most High God of that!)

Surrender to El Elyon.
