Yesterday we talked about the things that another way in which we hear from God is through the communication of His spirit and ours. I also mentioned a few things that block our spirits and hence our ability to hear from Him. So today I want to pick up by looking other ways to charge our spirits.
We’ve covered some of the points on spirit charging when we talked about faith. You must spend time in the Word of God, you must pray, and so forth. But I just want to point out a few other things as the Holy Spirit leads me, which we can also use to charge our spirits.
- Practice speaking in tongues. You are a spirit being. You have a language that your natural self can’t understand. If you don’t practice speaking it, you will become weak in it. It’s just like learning Spanish. Once you do, you’ll hear God’s voice. Don’t know how it works, but it does.
- Do a “clean sweep”. It is the spirit of a man that sustains his infirmity (Prov 18:14), but if your spirit is filled with “Guck” (hurt, bitterness, anger, resentment, doubt, fear), you need to clean it out. Hate to use this example but those things will really constipate you spiritually, especially if you’re not taking enough “Living Water” on a regular basis. And so from time to time, you need to take a moment, sit down, concentrate and deal with stuff like that once in a while (they’ll keep popping up in life). You’ll feel so much lighter when you’re done ‘crapping’ them out! And you’ll hear God much clearer.
- Fast. People don’t like to hear this word. It’s like “whoa!!! Ok that’s pushing it S”. But when you fast your flesh starts to weaken (that’s why your breath smells, and your perspiration…well you know). The more your flesh weakens, the more your spirit is strengthened. Perhaps some day I will talk on this, but if you really want to hear from God, go on a fast. A serious one where you give up food and anything fleshly and tap into His Word and so forth. I guarantee you you will always want your spirit to be alive.
Think Paul wraps up what I want to say pretty well. So let’s finish with that.
1 Cor 2: 11-16. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,
“Who has known the mind of the Lord
so as to instruct him?”But we have the mind of Christ.
You have the spirit of God in you. That means you already have a point of access to hear from God. Take charge of your spirit and keep it well and you will hear what He’s saying to you.
